Arrest in Stabbing of a Police Officer

The Saint John Police have arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with the stabbing of a police officer.

It is alleged that:

On Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at approximately 8:02 p.m., officers responded to reports of a man armed with a knife threatening staff and causing damage inside a Canadian Tire store in the 800-block of Fairville Boulevard in Saint John.

A number of officers responded to the scene. As one officer was entering to store to help, the suspect stabbed the officer with a knife.

Officers immediately stopped the attack and took the 35-year-old suspect into custody without injury. The injured officer was rendered aid at the scene and then transported to hospital where he is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.

There were a number of people inside the store at this time of the incident, but no other physical injuries were reported.

The Major Crime Unit and Forensics Services continue to investigate. The store was closed for several hours, while the scene was processed.

The Saint John Police would like to thank all the first responders and medical staff who assisted the injured officer. We would also like to thank the staff at Canadian Tire and the public for their patience and cooperation during the investigation.

The 35-year-old man is scheduled to appear in court this afternoon, Thursday, February 22, 2024, to answer to multiple charges in connection with the incident.
