In my capacity as Chief of Police, it is imperative that I respect due process resulting in the not guilty verdict rendered by the Court in the charges against Robert Mailman and Walter Gillespie. As such, I am concerned about the outcome, in particular, the role of the Saint John Police in the original investigation and prosecution.
Given the circumstances and out of a sense of duty and responsibility, I will conduct a comprehensive review of the involvement of the Saint John Police in this matter. In this regard, I have sent a letter to the Minister of Justice requesting their cooperation in providing a complete copy of their report regarding this occurrence.
I have also commissioned Allen Farrah of Clear-Path Solutions, Inc., a retired senior officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who has extensive knowledge, diversity and experience in policing, to carry out an independent review solely focused on the investigation of the Saint John Police in this case, and to whom I extend the full cooperation of the Saint John Police. Furthermore, a letter has been sent to the Minister requesting cooperation to assist in the review.
Pending the outcome of the review, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further.
Chief Robert M. Bruce
