The Saint John Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with an assault on a police officer.
It is alleged that:
On Friday, April 25, 2025, at approximately 00:27 a.m., police responded to call for service in the north end. The victim approached the officer and indicated that he had been assaulted by a male known to him.
The suspect left on foot and officers began to search the area.
An officer located the suspect on the Wall Street overpass with another male. As the officer approached the suspect to arrest him, he lunged towards the bridge railing.
The bystander and officer were able to stop him, but the suspect then tackled the officer and began assaulting them. The bystander was able to pull the suspect off the officer. The suspect then ran across the overpass but was quickly taken into custody without incident by other officers.
The officer and bystander both sustained injuries and are recovering at this time. The Saint John Police would like to commend the bystander for the immediate assistance given to our officer during this dangerous altercation.
Sullivan Romhild appeared in provincial court on Monday, April 28, 2025, for a bail hearing. He is charged with assaulting a peace officer, assault causing bodily harm, attempt to disarm a peace officer, probation violation and obstruction of a peace officer. He has been remanded into custody for an assessment and will be returning May 26, 2025.
The Saint John Police continues to investigate the original call for service and the incident on the Wall Street overpass. Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone in the area that has video footage or surveillance of the incident.
