Public Notice – Counterfeit Bills Circulating in Saint John

Share:

The Saint John Police are warning the public and local businesses to be vigilant following recent reports of counterfeit Canadian bills being passed in the community.

Over the past few weeks, we have seen an increase in reports in our area of counterfeit Canadian bank notes, specifically $20, $50, and $100 bills. We are encouraging residents and businesses to carefully examine any cash they receive. If a bill looks suspicious, trust your instincts and take steps to verify it before you accept it. It is a criminal offence to knowingly use or possess counterfeit money in Canada.

According to the Bank of Canada, here are some tips to identify counterfeit bills:

  • Blurry or misaligned print
  • Missing security features such as holograms or transparent windows
  • Differences in texture and/or colour
  • Raised ink on the main portrait
  • Tiny numbers in the window not matching the denomination
  • Portrait in the window not matching the main portrait

Further information on how to verify a bank note’s security features can be found on their website at Bank notes – Bank of Canada

If you suspect that you have a bill that could be counterfeit or if you have information about the source of the counterfeit money, contact the Saint John Police at 506-648-3333. Anonymous tips can be given to Crime Stoppers by calling toll-free at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), by submitting a secure web tip at crimenb.ca/tips/ or by using the P3 Tips app.

Together a safe, secure, healthy community
