The Saint John Police have launched a school zone safety program aimed at supporting the safe arrival of students whether they are walking, cycling or being driven to school. Officers will be increasing patrols and monitoring school zones throughout the city to ensure compliance with traffic laws and to enhance public safety.
A 2019 CAA poll found that nearly one quarter of drivers reported witnessing a near miss or collision in a school zone, more than half of which involved a child. Nearly half of Canadians said they witnessed a distracted driver in a school zone. (School Zone Statistics – CAA National)
The following are reminders for motorists:
- Slow down in residential areas, school zones, and playgrounds.
- Stop when a school bus has red lights flashing and the stop arm is extended.
- Follow the directions of crossing guards.
- If dropping off a child at school, do so in the designated drop off location and have the child exit the vehicle away from traffic.
“Traffic safety is especially important in school zones because children are more vulnerable and less predictable than adults, requiring more vigilance by drivers. Keeping our children safe in school zones it not an option, it is mandatory.” Chief R. M. Bruce
