The Saint John Police will be conducting a Seat Belt Campaign between February 10 and 13, 2026. The campaign will focus on educating the public about the dangers associated with driving without properly wearing a seat belt and on the enforcement of seat belt legislation.
According to the Government of New Brunswick, over 40% of vehicle occupants who die in a collision in our province are not wearing their seat belt. Many of these lives could have been saved if seat belts had been used.
The following are tips on how to properly wear a seat belt:
- The seat belt must not be twisted or cut.
- The buckle must be in good working order.
- The retractors work smoothly when pulling or releasing the seat belt.
- The seat belt is adjusted properly and fits snugly.
- Position the lap belt low over the hips and the shoulder belt over the shoulder and across the chest. Never place the shoulder belt under the arm or behind the back.
It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that all passengers under the age of 16 are properly fastened in a vehicle, in the appropriate child restraint device for their age, weight, and height. It is also necessary to inspect car seats, including booster seats regularly and replace them when needed.
If you need assistance with correctly and safely installing a car seat, contact the Saint John Police at 506-648-3333.
