The Saint John Police has referred a complaint against a Saint John police officer to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) for independent investigation.
It is reported that:
On May 27, 2026, at approximately 10:41 p.m., the Saint John Police attempted to stop a male on a motorized bicycle in the north end. The male fled and was pursued by police which led to a brief foot chase.
The male was subsequently arrested by officers for flight from police, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance.
On June 30, 2026, the accused filed a formal complaint with the New Brunswick Police Commission, alleging he was assaulted by one of the officers and sustained an injury. The Police Act conduct complaint is suspended at this time and will resume at a later date.
“The Saint John Police considers complaints involving the use of force serious and we are confident that SiRT will conduct a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation.” Acting Chief Neal Fowler.
The subject officer will be reassigned pending the outcome of the SiRT investigation.
SiRT is an investigative agency, independent of the police, whose mandate is to investigate matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and domestic violence or other matters of significant public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer.
