(UPDATE) Sudden Death Investigation – Viaduct at On Ramp to Highway 1 Westbound

The 44-year-old man that died as a result of injuries sustained during the fire has been identified as Peter Evan Ralph MCARTHUR.

The Saint John Police and Saint John Fire Department continue to investigate the circumstances that led to his death.

Again, we extend our condolences to the family and friends of Peter MCARTHUR.

The Saint John Police, in cooperation with the Saint John Fire Department, are investigating a fire that led to the death of a 44-year-old man.

It is reported that:

On Saturday, January 6, 2023, at approximately 8:02 p.m., emergency crews responded to a fire at an encampment near the Viaduct at the on ramp to Highway 1 westbound at mile marker 123.

On arrival, crews located an encampment on fire and a 44-year-old man with extensive burn injuries.

The man was transported to hospital and later transferred out of province for further medical treatment. On Sunday, January 7, 2024, he was pronounced dead.

No other physical injuries were reported.

The Saint John Police and Saint John Fire Department continue to investigate the cause of the fire.  We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased at this most difficult time.
