Update #6: March 17, 2023

On Friday, March 17, 2023, at approximately 7:25 a.m., the Saint John Police Major Crime Unit executed an entry warrant at a North End residence and arrested Evan Louis Tobias for an outstanding warrant in connection with the murder of 39-year-old Justin Breau that occurred on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, in Saint John. The 28-year-old remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court today, Friday, March 17, 2023.

Update #5: February 23, 2023, 3:00p.m.

On Thursday, February 23, 2023, Sarah Belzil turned herself into police. She was arrested on the outstanding warrant for arrest in connection with the murder of Justin Breau. She is currently in custody and scheduled to appear in court on Friday, February 24, 2023.

28-year-old Evan Louis Tobias still remains at large on an outstanding warrant for arrest in connection with the murder of Justin Breau.

WARRANT OF ARREST – SARAH JEAN BELZIL

On Thursday, February 16, 2023, a Warrant For Arrest was issued for 36-year-old Sarah Jean Belzil on a charge of first degree murder on the person of Justin Breau. Belzil is shown in the photograph.

Belzil is described 5’1”, slender build, blue eyes and blond hair. She is asked to turn herself into police immediately at 1 Peel Plaza in Saint John or by calling 506-648-3333.

Tobias is described as 6’0” tall, medium build, black curly hair, brown eyes, tattoo on his left cheek and above his right eye. He is asked to turn himself into police immediately at 1 Peel Plaza in Saint John or by calling 506-648-3333.

Update #2: January 27, 2023, 7:55 a.m.

On Thursday, January 26, 2023, at approximately 5:00 p.m., the Saint John Police Major Crime Unit arrested a fourth man in connection with the murder of 39-year-old Justin Breau that occurred on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, in Saint John. The 32-year-old man remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court today, Friday, January 27, 2023. Further information to follow.

Update: January 25, 2023 at 3:28 p.m.

Following a five-month complex investigation involving hundreds of exhibits, the Saint John Police Major Crime Unit has arrested three men in connection with the murder of 39-year-old Justin Breau that occurred on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, in Saint John.

On Tuesday, January 24, 2023, 47-year-old Charles William Shatford was arrested and appeared in court today, Wednesday, January 25, 2023, on a charge of first-degree murder. He was remanded to jail until February 10, 2023.

Two other men, ages 50 and 24, were also arrested today, Wednesday, January 25, 2023, in connection with Justin Breau’s murder and they also remain in custody. They are scheduled to appear in court tomorrow, Thursday, January 26, 2023.

The Saint John Police would like to thank the family and friends of Justin Breau for their patience as well as the public for their assistance.

The Saint John Police are investigating the murder of 39-year-old Justin David Breau.

On Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at approximately 3:57 p.m., the Saint John Police Force responded to a stabbing at a residence on Charles Street in Saint John.

It is alleged that:

Three unidentified masked men wearing dark clothing forced their way into an apartment.

Justin Breau was stabbed inside the apartment.

The suspects fled on foot towards Garden Street.

Emergency personnel administered first aid and transported Breau to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Saint John Police Forensic Identification Services and Major Crime Unit are investigating. No arrests have been made.

Searches and canvasses are on-going in the areas of Charles Street, Garden Street, Hazen Street and Coburg Street.

Police remain on scene in the area and traffic may be diverted.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses or anyone in the area that has cell phone photographs or video, dash-cam footage or video surveillance on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Evidence can be submitted by calling police or uploading to the following portal:
