As another school year begins, the Saint John Police would like to remind parents, guardians, and students about the importance of online safety and the serious implications of cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying is bullying with the use of digital technologies which can take many forms, such as sending hurtful messages, spreading rumours online, sharing personal information without consent, or excluding others. It can take place on social media, over messaging or gaming applications, and on cell phones. Cyberbullying can cause harm and can result in criminal charges.
The Saint John Police encourage all students to think carefully before posting, sharing, or responding to anything online. The Internet is a public space where criminal activity such as harassment, threats, identity theft, distribution of intimate images, or frauds are some of the offences that may occur and may lead to serious legal consequences.
“We remain committed to working with schools and families to help ensure students have a safe and positive learning environment both in the classroom and online.” Chief R.M. Bruce
Anyone who believes that they or their child may be a victim of a cybercrime is encouraged to contact the Saint John Police at 1-506-648-3333.
Together a safe, secure, healthy community
