With warmer weather and trails re-opening, the Saint John Police is encouraging all off‑road vehicle owners and operators to ride responsibly, respect local laws, and prioritize safety.
Operators of off-road vehicles, including all-terrain vehicles (ATV) and dirt bikes, must comply with provincial requirements related to registration and insurance, helmet use, age restrictions, and impaired driving laws. Failure to follow these laws can result in fines, vehicle seizure, and increased risk of serious injury or death.
Statistics Canada conducted a study on all-terrain vehicle fatalities in Canada between 2013 and 2019 (https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/11-627-m/11-627-m2021052-eng.htm):
- Alcohol/drug use was reported in 51% of all-terrain vehicle driver fatalities
- Road conditions, such as dangerous surface, a slope or a curve, were reported in 33% of all-terrain vehicle fatalities
- Not wearing a helmet/not safely wearing a helmet was reported in 33% of all-terrain vehicle fatalities
“Off-roading can be a fun and challenging activity for families and friends. Responsible riders are respectful of trails, sensitive areas, and all citizens. Enjoy the outdoors lawfully and with the courtesy of others in mind. Ride safe!” Chief R. M. Bruce
