The Saint John Police are warning the public and local businesses to be vigilant following recent reports of counterfeit Canadian currency being passed in the community.
It is reported that:
On July 16, 2025, the Saint John Police received complaints from three different financial institutions in the city reporting the circulation of counterfeit Canadian currency, specifically $100 bills. It is a criminal offence to knowingly use or possess counterfeit money in Canada.
The Saint John Police are encouraging residents and businesses to carefully examine any cash they receive. If a banknote looks suspicious, trust your instincts, and take steps to verify it before you accept it.
What to watch for:
- Blurry of misaligned print.
- Missing security features such as holograms or transparent windows.
- Differences in texture and/or colour.
- Ensure the image in the window changes colour.
- Feel for raised ink on the main portrait by running your finger over it.
- Check the window on the bill for tiny numbers matching the denomination.
- Verify that the portrait in the window matches the main portrait.
- Use a small, bright light to see tiny numbers in the maple leaf window.
Further resources on how to verify a banknote’s security features can be found on the Bank of Canada’s website at www.bankofcanada.ca/banknotes.
If you suspect that you have a bill that could be counterfeit currency or if you have information about the source of the counterfeit currency, contact the Saint John Police at 1-506-648-3333.
