(Update) Slow Down Move Over Campaign – May 06 – May 10, 2024

The Saint John Police in cooperation with the Department of Public Safety (JPS) are pleased to report on the impact of our Slow Down Move Over Campaign.

The results of the 2024 Slow Down Move Over Campaign are as follows:

Violations Issued 58 
Warnings Issued 13 
Commercial Vehicles Inspected 9 
Parking Tickets Issued 3 
Commercial Vehicles Checked 33

The Saint John Police will be conducting a Slow Down Move Over Campaign between May 06 – May 10, 2024. The focus of the campaign will be to promote safety for all emergency and service personnel through education and enforcement.

In New Brunswick, when an emergency or service vehicle is stopped on the road and has its flashing lights on, drivers must:

Slow down to one-half the posted speed limit and proceed with caution;
-Make sure it’s safe to proceed, then move over to the left, away from the vehicle.
-If there are two or more lanes of traffic, the driver must move into another lane
if it can be done safely.

What is an authorized emergency vehicle?

-a vehicle operated by a police officer or designated peace officer
-a fire department or fire fighting vehicle
-ambulance

What is a service vehicle?

-a tow truck
-a private or public utility corporation vehicle
-a road safety or maintenance vehicle under contract with the province of New Brunswick

What is the penalty?

The fine for not slowing down and moving over for an emergency vehicle is $292.50 and three demerit points.
